The Wadden Islands skim the border between the Wadden Sea and the North Sea. Hollum, Ballum and Nes are the island's three towns. Otherwise, there is mostly a lot of beach and dunes. The dunes are held together by marram grass planted in the early 19th century. The island belongs to the province of Friesland. To the east is the Oerd, a nature reserve where many birds breed. With 405 inhabitants, Ballum is the smallest village on Ameland. Ameland's town hall is located in Ballum. From 1389, Ameland was governed from Ballum by the noble family Van Cammingha. With 1285 inhabitants, Hollum is the largest village on Ameland. Ameland also has its own sad history. At Hollum, for instance, there is the horse grave. On 14 August 1979, the lifeboat stationed in Hollum came into action to provide assistance to the distressed German yacht "Windspiel". While launching the lifeboat, the cart slid into a deep gully. The eight horses could not be disconnected in time, causing the horses to drown. Ameland is a great island for those who like hiking or cycling. Do keep in mind that there is a lot of wind on the island.
