Starting in the 1940s, Jacques and Natasha Gelman assembled three important and separate collections. The first, focusing on European modern art, consisted of eighty-one paintings, drawings and sculptures and was bequeathed to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1998; the second consisted of ninety-five works of Mexican modern art, including paintings by Frida, Diego Rivera and Rufino Tamayo; and the third included mainly pre-Columbian sculpture.

Frida's work is characterised by cheerful colours, but contrasted with an alienating atmosphere. She did not shy away from controversy.
