Frida was always very close to her family. This is evident in this unfinished artwork, Family Portrait. During a long time in hospital in 1950, Frida tried to keep painting this piece, but she did not finish it. The artist painted a family tree with all the richness and diversity of her lineage: her mother's purepecha blood and her father's Hungarian. She also painted a foetus, a motif that recurs in many of her artworks. This painting has not only her family roots, but also emotional roots.
Magdalena Carmen Frida y Calderón (Coyoacán, Mexico, 6 July 1907 - 13 July 1954) was a Mexican surrealist painter.
Frida's work is characterised by cheerful colours, but contrasted with an alienating atmosphere. She did not shy away from controversy.
