France is best known for its wines.
Nowadays, those wines are mostly factory-made in large barrels and matured computer-controlled.
Things used to be different and wine was kept in large green bottles called 'Dame-Jeanne' or Demi-john by the English and Dama-Juana in Spain.
They are popularly called basket bottle, or korffles, because it is a large bottle around which a basket is woven. It exists in different sizes with a capacity of five to 54 litres. It is used for transporting liquids. The basket should protect the bottle from breaking.
In rural Bordeaux, I found this small brocante collection of 19th-century bottles on an old table under a shelter.
