Drenthe is home to a lot of history, as we all know. Forestry Gieten-Borger is no exception. At the beginning of the 20th century, trees were planted here for timber production. During construction, old boulders from the Ice Age were uncovered, which still serve as markers for the forest plots today, and the boulder road you walk along is also made of these stones. Today, the forest is not only an important source of timber, but also a popular spot for hikers and cyclists. It is part of National Park Drentsche Aa and a literal highlight is the Tree Crown Trail, which gives you a unique view through the tops of the trees.
On a sunrise hike, I explored the forest preserve. As the sun slowly rose, I wandered through all kinds of forest plots. The morning light creates brilliant pastel colours and a soft atmosphere.
