The Flower Market, flower and plant market in full, is a permanent market in the city centre of Amsterdam.
The market was located on the Sint-Luciënwal until 1862, but when the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal was filled in in 1883, the flower market had to move to its current location on the Singel between the Koningsplein and the Muntplein. At that time the market was still called the tree and plant market and hardly any cut flowers were sold until the 1960s.
The market stalls are located on boats lying in the canal. This is a relic from the time when all the flowers and plants on this market were brought in daily by water from outside the city. In recent decades, the flower market has become more and more a tourist attraction, which is why the assortment has been adapted to this. Nowadays many flower bulbs and souvenirs are also sold.
