Fishing for souls, Adriaen Pietersz van de Venne, 1614 oil on panel, h 98.5cm × w 187.8cm On the left are the Protestant Northern Dutch, on the right the Roman Catholic Southerners. In the wide river that separates them, both sides are fishing for souls. The Protestants' catch exceeds that of the Catholics. Moreover, the sun is shining on the left and the trees are in leaf. It is a reference to a psalm text: the true believer is like a tree bearing fruit whose leaves do not wither.
