They look deserted, these fishing boats lying offshore in shallow water. To us, this may seem strange, yet this is a typical sight in Denmark. During my trips to that country, I actually always come across them.
Meanwhile, for me personally, they are synonymous with a sense of peace and calm. Something the country seems to offer everywhere, especially the coastal area on the western side. The area feels familiar because of its similarity to our smaller Wadden Islands, but the vastness makes everything so much more impressive. This photo was taken in The Wadden Sea National Park, Denmark's largest national park. The island of Fanø is visible in the distance.
With this work, I try to capture that Danish calm, with just a little bit of tension added because of the approaching rain. I purposely took the picture before the downpour erupted in order not to make the water look too turbulent.
For people with a love of Denmark or Scandinavia, this work should fit very well into an interior. But its tranquillity could actually be used in any Dutch interior.
