A number of Marines in training are welcomed with red Bengal torches at the Van Ghent Barracks in Rotterdam. Accompanied by a military orchestra, the new batch of Marines walk into the gates of the barracks, surrounded by noisy crowds.
This photo came about because one of the marines in question is a good friend of mine. I wanted to capture how he, after completing the grueling Marine training, walked into the gates of the barracks. The final march is a euphoric moment in which the training is completed and after which the marines receive their well-deserved beret. Proud, tired and emotional, the men came walking in. All men with only one goal: to cross the finish line. With their chests out, their shoulders back and their legs pounding to the beat, the men passed by one by one. Here and there you could see a tear running and a cautious smile appearing.
This photo illustrates the strength and emotion that was felt during this special event. From the smoke that lit up the street like a red glow, the military orchestra slowly appeared. With a powerful drum roll they knew how to set the pace. Through the floating smoke, the shadows of the marines came closer and closer. Perfectly on the beat, they walked to the gates, surrounded by cheering, waving and the flashing of cameras.
