Modern navigation equipment means that lighthouses are no longer as important to navigation as they once were. Yet this beacon, on the south-western tip of Ilha de São Vicente, still serves as a powerful landmark. After a long night at sea, I knew that behind this lighthouse lay the final destination of the trip. From Boa Vista, the voyage had not been easy. South of the northern Cape Verde islands, the wind can be quite gusty. And as erratic as the wind, the volcanic coast is erratic and dry. The dark rocks make the white of the lighthouse stand out even more. The island of Santo Antão in the background lights up nicely in the sun, adding depth to the photo. The band of clouds at the top, and the strip of water at the bottom, frame the image. This puts extra emphasis on the Farol de Dona Amélia.
