Have you ever picked up an old magazine and looked at it very closely? All kinds of things happen.
This old fallen leaf may seem to have had its best time but nothing could be further from the truth. When the leaf discolors and falls to the ground it is just as important to nature as the leaves on the tree.
Old leaves provide natural frost protection for trees and other plants. Insects are ready to use mountains of leaf litter as nurseries and hibernate there. Blackbirds, hedgehogs and other animals search among the leaves for these small creatures. For them it is a real feast. When the weather gets warmer and spring is just around the corner, all the critters come out again and your garden is full of life. The leaves are slowly eaten by the microscopic animals and disappear as humus to feed the tree.
This photo work of an old fallen leaf suddenly offers a very different view of our world.
