The exmoor pony, together with the przewalski horse, is one of the last breeds of true wild primitive ponies. From time immemorial this type of pony occurred all over North-Western Europe, but only in the South-West of England, in Exmoor, the primitive characteristics have not been completely crossed away by breeding them with other horse breeds. The Exmoor pony is named after the area where it has been found for centuries, the Exmoor area in South West England. The breed is one of the oldest pony breeds in England and is probably one of the best preserved wild ancestors of the domesticated pony and horse breeds.
