Westersingel was constructed in the nineteenth century as part of the Water Project by engineer Rose. At that time this area was in the countryside outside the city; nowadays Westersingel is the first street people walk in to when leaving the Central Station.
This photo shows Westersingel at the beginning of the evening (which in early December actually falls already at the end of the afternoon) The iconic plane tree, which is on a peninsula, is reflected in the water of the canal.
On the right we see the pre-war buildings along Mauritsweg. In the background we see, through the branches of the tree, more recent buildings: from left to right, the Millennium Tower Codarts Art School, Concert and Congress Hall De Doelen, Calypso Appartments and Saint Paul's Church.
