Heidelberg is a well-known university town in central Germany, located on the banks of the Neckar river. Also famous are the historic city centre and the Renaissance castle on the mountainside above, which has been badly damaged several times during its history. Also well-known is the old stone bridge over the Neckar with its two towers.
