About the artwork
This photo was taken towards evening on the edge of the majestic Fish River Canyon in Namibia - the second largest canyon in the world. It was one of those quiet moments on my trip when the vastness of the landscape leaves you speechless. The sun was low and bathed the scenery in a warm, golden-coloured light that cast shadows and highlighted the gentle shapes of the plateau.
The dry scree in the foreground contrasts with the soft lines of the plateaus in the distance. A play of light and structure that seems almost surreal - as if painted. This silent force of nature, the ancient history of this landscape and the feeling of complete isolation left a lasting impression on me.
The landscape there is so breathtaking and extraordinary that the camera is only able to capture it to a very limited extent.
The first sight of the canyon was very emotional for me. I will treasure this great feeling forever.
I still remember the soft shimmer of the air, the smell of dust and sun and the feeling of being in a place where time doesn't matter. This photograph captures a hint of that - an invitation to pause, take a deep breath and lose yourself in the vastness of Africa.
Ideal in landscape format - as a mural it brings calm and depth to any room.
