Boreas is the ancient Greek god of the north wind and the most important of the four wind gods. He was winged and had two faces: one to see where he was going and one to see where he came from. In this painting he is depicted swirling around a large gnarled tree, the leaves being depicted as virgins with golden hairs blown to the ground.
The torso of the god is visible. Each young woman is naked and stands on the portrait like a timelapse. One maid is depicted straight and frontal with hips, belly and breasts exposed, the next on the back with buttocks, ending with a lady on her knees forward with one tit and silk visible.
Evelyn De Morgan (London, 30 August 1855 - there, 2 May 1919) was an English painter associated with the movement of the Pre-Raphaelites. She studied spiritualism, was an advocate of social reforms such as women's suffrage, and was interested in moral issues. She derived her themes from religious and allegorical figures and scenes and strong female figures, often with a message of hope and courage.
