About ‘Erfurt (Thuringia / Germany) - "Zur hohen Lilie"’ by Thomas Bugdoll

The "Hohe Lilie" at the Domplatz has emerged from a monastery courtyard of former Cistercian nuns. Parts of the old cellar walls from the 13th century are still preserved today. In 1472 the courtyard fell victim to a great city fire. Afterwards, the area was rebuilt in Renaissance style in 1536.

The façade on the square side captivates with its tail gable, the richly decorated window jambs and the magnificent vaulted niche portal.

The house is one of the oldest inns in Europe. It housed many famous personalities, including Martin Luther, Philipp Melanchton and the Swedish King Gustav Adolf.
