Erfurt has been the state capital of the Free State of Thuringia since 1991.
The fish market is the centre of the city. Here stands the neo-Gothic town hall (1870-75), which was built to replace its Gothic predecessor and whose interior is adorned with numerous murals depicting Thuringian history and legends. Important town houses belonging to wealthy woad merchants lend the square a special charm. No. 7, which houses an art gallery, is the house "Zum roten Ochsen" (1562). Much more modest is house no. 6 "Zur güldenen Krone", which housed the post office from 1615 onwards. On the north side of the fish market, the magnificent Renaissance façade of the house "Zum breiten Herd" (1584) stands out.
