Enlightenment in stone: the eternal peace of the sublime. by Walter G. Allgöwer

High above the mist-shrouded peaks of the Khao Kho Mountains in the Thai province of Phetchabun, a silent guardian of eternity stands watch. The majestic stone statue of the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, at Wat Phra That Sorn Kaew temple, captures a moment of perfect mindfulness.
His countenance is marked by a deep, unshakeable calm. His gently closed eyes seem to gaze not outwards, but into the infinite depths of his own inner self – an image of peace amidst a turbulent world. Particularly striking is the flame-like usnisha rising above his head. It is not merely an ornament, but a symbol of the blazing power of enlightenment, which breaks through the mind like a bright fire and dispels the darkness of ignorance.
The sculpture’s light-coloured stone stands out almost ethereally against the deep blue of the sky. Every intricate ornament on his body speaks of the devotion of those who created this sanctuary in Isan. Here, where the earth touches the sky, the Buddha invites the viewer to pause for a moment. In the silence of the mountains, the statue whispers of the transience of the moment and the enduring nature of compassion. A stone prayer that radiates far beyond the valleys of Thailand.
