The iconic English Electric Lightning of the British Air Force (Royal Air Force). The English Electric Lightning was the RAF's Cold War supersonic interceptor fighter, built by English Electric. It was the only British fighter capable of reaching speeds above Mach 2 and the British counterpart to the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter. A total of 339 were built; of these, only a dozen or so remain. These are displayed in various museums or serve as 'gatekeepers' at an airbase.
