Dürnstein is a municipality in the Austrian state of Lower Austria, located in the Krems-Land district.
The Ruins of Dürnstein, or Dürnstein Castle, famous for the fact that King Richard I of England, on the return from the Third Crusade (1189-1192), was held prisoner here by Duke Leopold V of Austria. Leopold V had been insulted by Richard in the Holy Land. In 1194 he was discovered by the minstrel Blondel and released after paying a ransom.
Emilie Mediz-Pelikan (December 2, 1861, Vöcklabruck Austria - March 19, 1908, Dresden, Saxony, Germany) was an Austrian landscape painter. Many of her works show some Symbolist influence. She lived in Munich and in the artists' colony in Dachau. Later she stayed in Paris and the artists' colony in Knokke.
