Simple portrait of a soldier at first glance, The Sentinel depicts the silhouette of Napoleon , almost imperceptibly in the background given the similarity of the shades used for the emperor's famous grey dress coat and the trunks of the brushwood. The hierarchical importance of the figures is reversed by this image, which, conversely, emphasises the importance of the leader whose protection depends on the loyalty, devotion and obedience of his men. Behind the grenadier leading the guard to the edge of the thicket, we see the profile of Napoleon, next to his staff.
Jean-Baptiste Édouard Detaille (Paris, France, 5 October 1848 - 23 December 1912) was a French academic painter and military artist known for his precision and realistic detail. He was considered the "semi-official artist of the French army".
