In the 17th century, seven mills were built in Stompwijk near Leidschendam to dry the surrounding polders. The most northerly three-course corridor, consisting of three octagonal mills, was retained and was fully operational until 1951. Nowadays, these permanently inhabited windmills serve as reserve drainage for the Nieuwe Driemanspolder.
