Mills, like water, are part of the Netherlands. Windmills such as the one near Leidschendam were made to control the water and keep the polder dry. The mills standing near the driemanpolder were built in the 17th century and still turn once a month on a Saturday. One of the mills burned down completely in 1902 after a lightning strike. Visiting the mills is not possible. For those who want to escape the big city from time to time, a trip to the Drieman polder is a lovely getaway. The three mills on a dike is a truly Dutch picture and is a must-see for any tourist.
