A dune is a mound of fine sand along the coast, a river, in a sandy desert, or in other places. A dune is a land form, and is created by blowing sand into a hill. Dunes can form unique nature areas with a wide variety of animal and plant species. When dunes are overgrown, they are referred to as green dunes. Dunes along the coasts of low-lying areas are often also flood defences.
An area of dunes is also called a dune system because the dynamic action of wind and water sometimes causes the dunes to change location, which can have serious consequences (see Eucla).
