About the artwork
Along the North Holland coast, the dunes wake up in silence, shrouded in a soft veil of mist or early dew. The landscape looks enchanting and serene; contours blur, colours are muted and sounds seem muffled by the damp air.
Patches of mist appear among the marram grass and slowly glide over the dune tops. The sun tries to break through, casting diffused light across the sand and making dewdrops sparkle like tiny crystals on cobwebs and leaves.
These moments are brief and fragile, but so special for that very reason. In the mist, the dunes seem like a different landscape - mysterious, almost unreal. Walkers move silently along winding paths, with only the soft crunch of sand under their feet.
The mist both hides and reveals. It invites stillness, attention to the small: a distant bird call, a hare scurrying away between the bushes, a suddenly visible view as soon as the mist lifts.
The dunes with mist or dew are not a backdrop, but a living atmosphere. A reminder that even familiar places can surprise again and again, especially when nature shows its subtle magic in the early morning.
