An image in summer showing the dune landscape with marram grass in the dune. Marram grass blooms in June and July with the long spike plumes also well depicted here. The dune landscape of the Schoorl Dunes is unique in the Netherlands and is characterised by high dunes and vast expanses of sand. One notable plant that is common here is marram grass. This strong, tough grass plays an essential role in stabilising the dunes. Marram grass has long roots that burrow deep into the sand, holding it together and preventing erosion. Without this grass, the dunes would be constantly blown away by the wind.
The Schoorl Dunes, with their varied vegetation of coniferous forests, heathland and open sand plains, are an important nature reserve. Walkers and cyclists can enjoy beautiful views and peaceful nature here. Its diverse flora and fauna make it a favourite place for nature lovers. The marram grass contributes to the preservation of this valuable landscape, which is not only of ecological importance, but also provides a refuge for rare plants and animals.
