Dune is a digital artwork created by a fusion between a drawing and a painting. The drawing was created using drawing techniques of pencil and charcoal and the painting consists of multiple layers of various painting techniques.
The work was inspired by a photo I took in the dunes near the beach of Stellendam. It was springtime. The helmet was still brown. The sun was shining and there was a moderate to strong wind at sea.
The grass on the dunes always attracts me. I especially like the way it moves in the wind and how the sunshine can lighten it up beautifully. It is the elements that also drew me to this image. The bare patches of sand between the helm on this dune stood out to me the most. This combined with the glow of the sun on the sand and in the wavy marram grass, under a blue sky make the picture for me pristine, warm, wild and fresh.
I edited this artwork to give me a retro eighties feel, which I personally have a connection to as I was born in 1982 and eighties cartoons are a great source of inspiration for me. Therefore, the image also gives me vintage vibes and makes it a hip contemporary artwork for me.
