Duck is the general name for a number of species of birds in the family of ducklings (Anatidae). All species in the Anatidae are called "ducks" except those in the subfamily Anserinae, the geese and swans. Ducks are primarily aquatic birds, usually smaller than their relatives, the swans and geese, with shorter necks, and can be found in both fresh and salt water. The Tadorninae, which include the shelduck, are midway between a goose and a duck in size.
Ducks are sometimes confused with several species of unrelated birds of similar shape, such as divers, grebes, rheas, coots, and moorhens. Sometimes, "duck" refers to only female ducks. A male duck is called a "woerd". A young duck is called a pigeon (sometimes piel); in general the young of chickens and ducks are also called a pullet or a pulleke. A mallard, the most common species, can be recognized by the color and some curled feathers on the tail (this is not always visible). source wikipedia
