The Dresden Zwinger is the most important late baroque building and a landmark of the Saxon capital Dresden. The Zwinger was built between 1710 and 1728. In 1849, the Zwinger burnt down to its foundations and was rebuilt. During the bombing raid on Dresden in February 1945, the Zwinger was again badly destroyed. Reconstruction then lasted until 1963. Today you can visit an important art gallery as well as collections and exhibitions in the Zwinger.
Dresden is the capital of the Free State of Saxony. With around 570,000 inhabitants, Dresden is the second largest Saxon municipality after Leipzig and the twelfth largest city in Germany. The name Elbflorenz (also Florence of the North or Florence on the Elbe) became established as an epithet for the city of Dresden at the beginning of the 19th century. The title was originally intended to honour Dresden's art collections and its architecture.
Other world-famous sights in Dresden include the Frauenkirche church and the opera house named after its architect Gottfried Semper.
