The Cathedral of Sanctissimae Trinitatis is the youngest baroque building in Dresden. Often referred to as the Court Church, it was built between 1739 and 1751 by the Italian architect Gaetano Chiaveri in the Baroque style. With a floor area of almost 4,800 square metres, it is also the largest church building in Saxony. The crypt of the Catholic Cathedral of St Trinitatis on Schloßplatz contains 49 sarcophagi of the Wettin electors and kings and their relatives. The heart of Augustus the Strong also rests here.
Dresden is the capital of the Free State of Saxony and the second largest city in Saxony after Leipzig and the twelfth largest city in Germany.
The Frauenkirche, Semper Opera House and Zwinger Palace are probably the most famous sights in the metropolis on the Elbe.
The name Elbflorenz (Florence on the Elbe) was coined as an epithet for the city of Dresden at the beginning of the 19th century. The title was originally intended to honour Dresden's art collections and its architecture, but today it is also used in connection with other similarities and points of contact between the Saxon and Tuscan capitals.
