About the artwork

Parrots (Psittacidae and Psittaculidae) form a very large group. The South American parrots like the macaws belong to the Psittacidae (Parrots of Africa and the New World) along with a number of families in Africa. The lories and parakeets from Australasia and some genera including the dwarf parrots (genus Agapornis) from Africa and the vasa parrots from Madagascar belong to the Psittaculidae (Parrots of the Old World).

In addition, the New Zealand parrots (Strigopidae) and the cockatoos (Cacatuidae) are distinguished separately. Cockatoos and New Zealand parrots are also called parrots in the vernacular, but they do not belong to the "real" parrots.

Most species occur in the tropics and south of that in the whole southern hemisphere. In the southern hemisphere, naturally occurring species of parakeets are found in areas with temperate climates such as the cockariki on islands south and east of New Zealand and the magellanic parakeet in the extreme south of Chile. Through escape from captivity or deliberate introductions, wild populations in the temperate climate zone of the Northern Hemisphere emerged during the twentieth century, such as the necked parakeets in major cities in the Netherlands and Belgium.

The word "parrot" comes from the Spanish word papagayo, which in turn is probably derived from the Arabic babagha and Persian babgha source wikipedia.
