Dramatic Antarctica – Icebergs beneath a dark polar sky by Nanda Bussers

This nature photograph captures the raw and untamed essence of Antarctica. At the centre of the image stands a monumental, jagged iceberg that stands out against a heavy, anthracite-grey cloudy sky. The detailed texture of the ancient ice, with its deep cracks and subtle blue hues, forms a sharp contrast with the dark, calm waters of the Southern Ocean.

In the foreground, countless smaller pieces of pack ice and ‘growlers’ drift, lending depth and rhythm to the composition. The threatening sky above the horizon reinforces the atmosphere of isolation and the immense power of nature in the polar region.

In 2024, I made my dream trip to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and finally Antarctica. A place you can only truly understand once you’ve been there yourself.

What moved me most there was the silence. A silence that is almost tangible. As if everything slows down for a moment: time, your thoughts, your breathing. In that vast white world, amidst the ice, the wind and the animals, I felt both very small and deeply connected.

With my camera, I tried not only to capture those moments, but above all to feel them. As if I wanted to preserve something of what was happening inside me. It is precisely in that stillness that space is created. For peace, for reflection, and sometimes also for a form of healing.

From this journey, I have selected 32 images. Images that convey something of that experience. Of the silence, the vulnerability and the power of this place.
