About "Dragon rising from a fan, Totoya Hokkei, 1832. Japanese art. Surinomo"

by Dina Dankers

About the artwork

"A woman paints a dragon on a fan that then seems to fly away. Or is it also a dragon on the folding screen she is sitting next to? On the floor a paint box, paper and brushes. On the left a box with unpainted fans. With one poem.

A surimono is a luxurious print in which an image is combined with one or more poems. When printing a surimono, thicker paper, blind embossing and metal pigments, such as copper and silver powder, were often used. The prints were often commissioned by poets and given as exclusive gifts to friends and relations."
