Dordrecht is part of the metropolitan agglomeration Drechtsteden which has about 280,000 inhabitants. The city lies where the Merwede splits into the Noord and Oude Maas rivers. The municipality of Dordrecht covers the entire Eiland van Dordrecht. The residents of Dordrecht mostly call their city Dordt. Dordrecht has four police stations, two fire stations, a hospital (Albert Schweitzer Hospital) and a prison (Gevangenis Dordrecht). Dordrecht was first mentioned in a text from the twelfth century, when the city was still referred to as Thuredrech, and was granted city rights in 1220. During the Middle Ages, the city developed as an important trading town and staple city and was one of the six major cities of Holland. Later, the city's importance declined, but its inner city still recalls this rich past.
