On the Fischland-Darss-Zingst peninsula, it will not escape your notice when driving around there, namely the richly and colourfully decorated doors. It is an old tradition that was mainly used for the front doors of boatmen's houses. There was a lot of symbolism involved. For instance, on many doors you can see an image of the sun, and this represented a safe journey home. The tradition died out a bit after the disappearance of sailing ships, but came back in full force with the onset of tourism. Now you can see this art form on many a front door and also on the many cottages rented out to tourists.
