In my still life period I also painted dolls. This painting belongs to that stage where I was keen to find a form of security with the familiar toys that stood before me and each doll revealed to me its best face and posture which I reflected as best I could in oil colours on a canvas. The lamp on the left provides warm light. The cloth in the background swings vertically and horizontally with rhythmic black stripes. The blue marionette sits on its own cloth. In the centre with Scottish trousers the little man looks good. Slow, patient work to paint every stripe, every fold, pattern and shape. Therefore a painting of dolls "right down to the dolls"!...
