The cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), also called plaice, plaice-dove, water raven or coal goose, is a fairly large and conspicuous bird. The cormorant found in Western Europe belongs to the family of cormorants (Phalacrocoracidae), of which (depending on the source consulted) 26 to 42 species are known. They are all fairly large waterfowl, living mainly on fish.
