Red/white diagonally striped, already visible from afar the Haamstede lighthouse. The colours form a nice contrast with the dunes, beach and sea. This sleek detail attracted me to photograph in this beautiful shade of red.
Haamstede lighthouse was built between 1837 and 1840 to serve as a safe beacon for shipping. The immediate cause was the sinking of four ships off the coast of Schouwen in the winter of 1830/1831. The design for the tower and three service houses came from Leendert Valk (1794-1867).
