About "Describe the painting by Jindřich Štyrský, Woman carrying a jug, 1923"

by Atelier Liesjes

About the artwork

The painting "Woman carrying a jug" by Jindřich Štyrský from 1923 shows an abstract and surrealist interpretation of a woman carrying a jug. The composition consists of a mix of geometric shapes and planes in muted colours such as green, beige, grey and black. The shapes overlap and create a layered effect, with the contours of the woman and the jug only vaguely discernible. The texture of the paint and brushstrokes add to the abstraction and give the painting a dynamic feel. This work is interesting because it marks Štyrský's transition to abstract art and shows his experiments with form and colour.

Jindřich Štyrský (Dolní Čermná, Czech Republic 11 August 1899 - Prague, 21 March 1942) was a Czechoslovak painter, poet, editor, photographer and surrealist draughtsman and creator of modern art.

His work is known for his dreamy and fantastic images, often exploring themes of eroticism, mysticism and the subconscious. Štyrský was one of the founders of the Surrealist Group of Czechoslovakia and worked closely with his artistic partner Toyen (Marie Čermínová)
