About the artwork

Delft is a city in the province of South Holland in the Netherlands. It is known for its rich history, cultural heritage and its role as a centre of innovation and technology.

Delft has a long history dating back to the 13th century. It became a prominent city during the Dutch Golden Age in the 17th century, known for its economic prosperity, trade and art.

The city is known for its traditional Delftware pottery. This distinctive blue and white ceramic pottery has been produced in Delft since the 17th century and is still highly regarded.

Delft is often associated with the famous Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer. The cityscape and sights of Delft feature in some of his most renowned works, such as 'View of Delft'.

Delft is home to one of the best technical universities in the world. Founded in 1842, TU Delft is renowned for its research and education in engineering, technology and applied sciences.

Delft boasts picturesque canals and well-preserved historical architecture. The city centre is filled with charming buildings, including the Nieuwe Kerk and the Oude Kerk.

Delft's Prinsenhof is a historic site where William of Orange, a key figure in the Dutch War of Independence, was assassinated in 1584. The bullet holes from the assassination can still be seen in the wall.

The Markt is Delft's central square and is surrounded by historic buildings and lively pavement cafés. It is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.
