About "Deceased train ticket counters"

by Marianne Dirix

About the artwork

Nothing remains of the grandeur of the ticket offices at the former Montzen-Belgium train station. Once it was crawling with commuters and train passengers. The line provided a connection to the railroad towards Aachen and Tongeren, but since the rise of the automobile, the train as a passenger transport became less and less, so this unprofitable railroad for passenger transport was discontinued. Freight transport was moved to the brand new marshalling yard a little further on, which is considered one of the largest of its kind in Europe. Train passengers can travel from the train station in Welkenraedt to the towns of Tongeren and Aachen.
The train station is totally dilapidated and deserted, which means that it is literally shunted out and figuratively it looks like the ticket counters have died. The atmosphere is grim and everywhere you can hear the rustling of mice and rats among the rubble. Cats also populate this deserted, once illustrious place. I was struck by this scene and especially by the view from the front ticket office that runs symmetrically through to the other ticket offices.
