In the North Holland dune reserve Castricum-Castricum in the North Holland dune reserve between and Heemskerk is the largest ' Jellyfish ' of Netherlands. It is the water inlet where every minute large amounts of water is pumped in the dunes. The water comes from the IJsselmeer and filtered for here is our drinking water.
IJsselmeer in the water that is pumped, the dunes here comes from the IJsselmeer. The water is pumped from the IJsselmeer at Andijk, purified, and transported via a 52 km long pipe to Heemskerk. There it is again filtered and should the ' Medusa ' at the dunes. There the water slowly seeps into the soil and is it naturally stripped of bacteria and viruses.
After a minimum of 30 days is the clean water of 40 meters pumped up, stripped of iron and lime and the drinking water suitable for consumption.
800 litres per second every second day use flows of 6 people from ' the Medusa '. That is ca. 800 litres of water per second (2850 m³ per hour). On an annual basis is 25 billion liters of water.
