About the artwork

The men on the boat threaten to run into the shore and damage the rowboat in the rough sea in the storm with the big waves on the water.

Lake Constance, in some languages the Lake of Constance, is a lake in the border area of Austria, Germany and Switzerland - it covers the Austrian state of Vorarlberg, the German states of Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria and the Swiss cantons of St. Gallen, Thurgau and Schaffhausen. The lake consists of the Obersee, the Untersee.

Joseph Wopfner (also Josef Wopfner; born 19 March 1843 in Schwaz, Tyrol, † 22 July 1927 in Munich) was an Austrian landscape painter and representative of the Munich School. Because he often used motifs from the Chiemgau for his paintings, he is also known as a Chiemsee painter.

In 1873, he was one of the co-founders of the Munich artist association Allotria. In recognition of his achievements, he received the Bavarian Michael Order in 1887. The Royal Academy of Fine Arts, of which he had been an honorary member since 1896, appointed him titular professor on 3 November 1888.
