On the Île Sainte-Marguerite of the Îles de Lérins off Cannes on the Côte d'Azur, hundreds of daffodils bloom wildly in spring around the fort where the Man in the Iron Mask was imprisoned for years, exuding the magic of spring well before Easter.
The Lérins Islands in the blue Gulf of Napoule on the Côte d'Azur have retained their tranquillity and enchant visitors with their Mediterranean charm - and their unspoilt nature.
The archipelago consists of two main islands, each accompanied by an uninhabited islet: Île Sainte-Marguerite from Îlot de Tradelière, and Île Saint-Honorat from Îlot Saint-Ferréol. The largest island in the Lérins archipelago is Sainte-Marguerite, measuring 3200 x 900 metres. It owes its name to the sister of the hermit Honorat, who founded the abbey on the neighbouring island. It is a veritable paradise with 15 mini beaches in the azure blue sea. Saint-Honorat, where monks cultivate olive groves and vineyards, is only about half the size.
