About ‘Cuban flamingos in Schwerin’ by Holger Felix

At Schwerin Zoo, 28 Cuban flamingos live in a large pond complex. During the warmer months, they inhabit their outdoor lagoon, whilst a modern, heated winter enclosure, built in 2019, allows visitors to observe them more closely even during the colder months. Within the enclosure, the breeding colony builds conical mud mounds for their eggs and raises their young. Incidentally, the birds get their characteristic pink to red colour from natural carotenoids in their diet, which are specially added to their food at the zoo. Furthermore, many zoos mix natural ingredients such as paprika or carrot juice into their feed to enhance their magnificent red colour.
