About "Crusaders in the western harbour"

About the artwork

A decommissioned cruise ship lay in the western harbour of the Hanseatic city of Wismar until the beginning of April 2022.
The approximately 200-metre-long "Superstar Libra" was actually intended to be used as a hotel or sleeping ship for the shipyard workers at the MV shipyards. According to Greek media, it was towed to the shipyard in Aliaga on the Turkish Aegean coast in June 2022. The owner at the time, Genting Hong Kong, originally intended to send the ship directly from Wismar for scrapping. The MV State Office for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Geology had prohibited this. The ship was therefore categorised as waste and was not allowed to be taken to other EU countries for scrapping.

The 200 metre long "Superstar Libra" was built as a cruise ship around 30 years ago. Before it was put into service as a residential ship in Wismar, it was given a new coat of paint. The bottom of the ship was also repaired. The shipyard's own shore power system supplied the "Libra", and the waste water was pumped directly into the town's sewage treatment plant.

Now this beautiful old ship is long gone. It has been scrapped, like many old cruisers in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
