Its food consists mainly of seeds of coniferous trees. Especially of spruce species, but in the southern parts of the range also pine. They can remove these seeds hanging from the cones, although they sometimes bite off a whole cone and take it to a seat (usually on a forked branch) to remove the seeds. In doing so, they can sometimes fly with a cone as heavy as they are themselves. The seeds of pines are in the larger and hard-shelled cones, so the birds that feed primarily on these have a slightly heavier beak. When food is scarce, the birds, which eat mainly spruce seeds, will switch to pine seeds.
