Balos beach in Crete is one that is well known to a lot of tourists. It is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, however, a bit trickier to reach. If you want to go by your own transport, the car, you will have to endure a very narrow, about 8 kilometres long dirt bumpy road with potholes, boulders and passing goats. Once you've had those, you can hope you're still in time to park in the car park. Otherwise, you will have to park it along the already narrow road. Then you start the walk down. The fantastic orange colours of the rocks and desiccated vegetation in the foreground contrast so nicely with all those bright blues of the sea and sky. You can expect another tough descent after this point, after which you will get your reward: the super clear shallow waters of Balos.
