About ‘Crested caracara – Intelligence with a rough edge’ by Robert Jan Smit

The Crested Caracara (Caracara plancus) is a bird of prey that cannot be pigeonholed into a single stereotype. Whereas many birds of prey are associated with speed and pure hunting power, this caracara exudes intelligence, opportunism and character. With its striking bald orange face, dark crown and powerful beak, it is a sight that immediately commands attention. In this photo, the Crested Caracara sits alertly on a weathered tree stump, its wings partially open. The moment suggests movement, control and readiness: as if the bird could take flight or claim its territory at any moment. The combination of the detailed plumage, the sharp gaze and the calm, soft background light creates a powerful yet balanced image.
